What is a Fire door
A fire door is a door with a fire resistance rating [ referred to as a fire protection rating ] used as part of a passive fire protection system to reduce the spread of fire and smoke between separate compartmentss of a structure and to enable safe egress from a building or structure.
How can I find out more about an existing fire door?
Each fire door is labeled with a permanent label that must remain legible. Fire-rated frames may have a label or embossment from a listing agency. The door and frame labels contain a wealth of information, including the manufacturer, length of time the component is designed to resist fire, whether the opening is to be equipped with fire exit hardware, and whether the door carries a temperature rise rating or is a smoke door assembly.
Fire door labels usually include a number allowing manufacturers to access more information about the door’s original construction. Frame labels may state a fire resistance duration longer than that of the door. In this case, the assembly’s rating will be the lower of the two. Some hardware, such as fire exit hardware, will also be labeled, but the information on the label is typically less detailed.
Where can I find the code requirements for fire doors?
National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 80, Standard for Fire doorsand other Opening protectives, is referenced by the International Building Code (IBC),International Fire Code (IFC), NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, and other codes and standards. NFPA 105, Standard for the Installation of Smoke Door E46 and Other Opening Protectives, addresses smoke doors and is also referenced in these publications.
Steel fire door frames
Hollow metal door frames are the most comenly used frame for everyday application. Any retrofit or other field modification to a fire rated opening can potentially impact the fire rating of the opening. Our steel frames are available in 16 and 18 gauge for 1-3/4” doors. All standard frames are manufactured from cold rolled or galvanized A40 steel.
Steel fire doors
Fire rated steel doors play a vital role in keeping people safe and minimizing property damage during a fire. Our fire rated steel doors with glass window kits are a great way to add extra light to a room, while providing additional safety to any occupants. Labeled fire doors control the spread of fire and smoke for up to 3 hours. Metal fire doors are an economical alternative to wood fire doors, when more than a 20 minute rating is required. Steel is the sole door material to deliver a 3 hour fire rating. Steel, which may be flush, paneled or corrugated with internal insulation. Composite doors consist of noncombustible or fire-resistive core material with a chemically impregnated wood band edge. They are covered with wood faced veneers, laminated plastic or steel. All these doors are manufactured by many firms and are approved for use as long as they are properly labeled by Underwriters’ Laboratories/U/L
Glass fire doors
It can be hard to believe that glass is an effective material used in fire protection, but thanks to advanced fire technology, it’s just as good as any. However, we’re not just talking about standard glazing here (as this would shatter under the pressure of heat) – it’s important to realise that glass fire doors must be made from fire resistant glass. This means that the glass has passed the appropriate fire tests and has been certified fire safe.
Fire resistant glass is given an E classification, meaning that the glazing will remain transparent once exposed to fire or heat, for maximum visibility and the passing through of light. It also means that the glass will only prevent the spread of fire and smoke, but does not prevent the transmission of heat. The time frame in which fire rated glass will effectively segregate areas and prevent fire and smoke from spreading, is indicated by the number following its E classification rating.
Wood Fire door
Architectural grade wood fire doors control the spread of fire and smoke for up to 90 Minutes. Fire rated wood doors are available in a variety of veneers, styles and sizes. Fire doors often are used on openings leading from corridors to offices, closets, storage rooms, stairwells, mechanical rooms or any other opening that penetrates a fire barrier wall. Fire rated wood door made of mineral core materials which is suitable for room and corridor partition openings where rated doors are required. These doors are manufactured with the Superstile for superior screw holding strength and split resistance.
Wood fire door frames
Unlike other commercial fire rated openings which feature hollow metal frames that do not match the doors with which they are paired,we have specially engineered and tested , fire door technology to maintain the highly desired and standard 1-¾″ thickness up to a 90-minute fire rating.
