Wind loaded doors are especially important if your business is likely to be subjected to high winds, read on to know more about our range of wind loaded doors.

What is wind load?

Wind load refers to the ‘load’ that wind speed and air density combine to produce, when impacting upon a building. When winds are extremely high, low pressure areas can be created on buildings that create a type of suction pressure; sometimes this can be so intense that it can damage a building.

Wind load is made of 3 components:

  • Uplift load
  • Shear load
  • Lateral load

What are wind loaded doors?

Wind load when used in reference to commercial doors, refers to the positive or negative wind pressures that move toward, or away from the door.

How do you determine wind load?

There are a number of factors that come into play when determining wind load for a specific door, and wind load requirements for industrial and commercial doors must meet a minimum required standard and be able to withstand a wind gust of 20 p.s.f. or 88 mph for 3 seconds. If a door is constructed from a single layer of fabric, rubber or steel, then it will only meet a low wind load rating. Ideally, especially if you live in a region prone to high winds, you need a door that has been designed and constructed to maintain a Windload of up to 150 mph.

Do you need wind loaded doors?

If your business operates in a region that is regularly (or is at high risk of being) affected by hurricanes and other extreme weather patterns, then a wind loaded door will be a smart investment. Designed to stand up to strong winds, they can be the difference in your business being badly affected by high winds, or surviving intact.

Commercial warehouse doors are particularly vulnerable to wind induced pressure due to their sheer size, and a gust of wind that is especially strong, will easily find a weak spot and cause any amount of devastation.

Lately, both local and state governments have put stricter building codes in place due to the devastation and damage caused by recent hurricanes and storm force weather conditions. So, not only should you have wind loaded doors installed for the safety or your business and its employees/customers, but you may be required to have them fitted by law.
